Paul Gilbert

Paul qualified as a lawyer in 1994. He specialises in litigation at Finers Stephens Innocent including general commercial disputes, media law, contentious intellectual property, professional negligence, criminal and public law. He is a regular contributor to radio, TV and online publications.

Berkeley Greenwood
Berkeley is a government relations adviser who specialises in healthcare policy. He has a background as a political researcher and was twice a parliamentary candidate. An economist by training, he has a particular interest in healthcare access and cost efficacy issues and the policy debate that underlies these. His previous work in this area includes
renal disease.
Stuart Hobday
Stuart is a self-employed entertainment consultant/agent, who has worked in the industry for 30 years and is James Whale’s agent. His work in theatre, music, artist representation and concert promotion has seen
him involved in a wide variety of fund raising enterprises within all of those fields.
Tim O'Brien MA DM FRCS(Urol)

Tim is a consultant urologist at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital NHS Trust. He trained in general and vascular surgery before specialising in urology in 1992. He has special interests in all aspects of urology cancer, including screening. He also has clinical interests in urinary tract infection and sexual dysfunction. He is actively involved in urological cancer research and previously worked with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in Oxford.

Chris Thomas ACA

Chris has over 20 years experience in finance roles across the public, private and voluntary sectors. He was the finance director of a national kidney charity for eight years, and is currently director of finance at Addaction, the leading drug and alcohol support charity. He also brings experience of HR, IT and corporate governance to the Fund.

James Whale Chairman

He presented late night phone-in programmes on UK radio for several decades and was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2000 and his experience tackling the condition spurred him on to set up the charity six years later. He has been married to Melinda since 1970 and they have two children, James and Peter.

Melinda Whale

Brings a wealth of experience to the Fund as a carer of a partner who was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Melinda’s world turned ‘upside down’ when James was diagnosed in 2000. Her experience dealing with the condition and its consequences made her determined to ensure that the best possible information was available for patients and carers in the future.


Lord Addington Honorary President

Dominic was the youngest serving peer in the House of Lords aged 22 after taking his father's title. Became active after graduating from the University of Aberdeen becoming Liberal Democrat sports spokesman in 1993, and has also been disability spokesman since 1994. Vice President of the British Dyslexia Association.


Lord Nazir Ahmed Honorary Vice President

Nazir Ahmed was born in 1957 and became a peer in 1998. He was born and educated in Rotherham and became a successful food retailer and property developer. Nazir is a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Human Rights Commission and has previously served as chair for the South Yorkshire Labour Party.


Earl Freddie Howe Honorary Vice President

A banker by training, Lord Howe is the opposition spokesperson for health and social services in the House of Lords with a special interest in penal affairs and agriculture. He farms in Buckinghamshire, is president of the National Society for Epilepsy and plays an active part in other charities.
